Putting virtual reality into use with facebook

So you think virtual reality is soooo last week? Think again! Last week Mark Zuckerberg announced the Oculus Connect. A interactive functionality for the virtual reality glasses Oculus Rift, which was acquired in 2014 for 2 billion dollars.

During the live demo Mark had a meeting with the facebook employees Michael and Lucy that were represented by their 3D avatars. There they could interact, show emotions and interact with the audience watching the demo. At the same time they could chose the place where the meeting would hold place, from the bottom of the ocean to Mars or even Mark Zuckerberg’s house.

Beyond using it to talk to other people the Oculus Connect gives other options as playing card games, lightsaber (and other swords) fighting, designing and interaction with anything that comes in mind, answering facebook messenger calls and even taking selfies inside the virtual reality – as the one featured in this blog, which was taken while Mark was giving the demo in an auditorium, Priscila Chan was in her own office and Beast was chilling at the family’s house. I know that as a Brazilian living in the Netherlands with half of my family living in the US and the other in Brazil I can’t wait until I can spend Sundays with them again, even if it is in virtual reality.

The tool reaches high levels of interaction and this is only the first demo. We can expect much more from it. Watch the 7 minute demo here.
